How to Download an ODBC Driver

Posted on July 25, 2018

Performance Navigator® requires an ODBC connection to connect to your IBM i system, but it does not come with your PC’s operating system. IBM has a downloadable they’ve titled Access Client Solutions, which we recommend our customers use to get that ODBC connection.

We created a tutorial video (don’t worry, it’s under 3 minutes!) to help you download the driver. Take a look, or use the instructions below.

In your browser, go to: IBM's Entitled Systems Support.

You have to sign in with an IBM ID. If you don’t have an IBM ID, you can register for one on this same page. Once you’re signed in, on the left side of the window, go to “My Entitled Software”.

Check the “Brand Selection” option on the right side of the window, and make sure you have “Power (IBM i)” selected. If you need to change it, the website will warn you that anything you currently have selected will be discarded. Click “Continue”.

Next, go to “Software Downloads” on the left. Select “IBM i” as your operating system, and select the right version for your system (for example, V7R3M0). Click “Continue”. Step 2 will appear below, and you will check the box next to “5770-SS1”. Go to the bottom and click “Continue”. If asked to confirm your Language, do so and click “Continue”.

Step 3 will appear. Click “hide/show” under the “Product” section next to “5770-SS1”. A list of packages will appear below. Click “hide/show” to see the contents of the first package you see. Scroll down until you see “IBM i Access Client Solutions - Win AP”. The size should be less than 500 MB. Click the check box to the left of this item. Scroll down, and click “Continue”.

On the next screen, you will be asked to agree in order to download. Click “I agree”.

You have the option of using the IBM Download director by clicking “Download now”, or by using HTTP. We like HTTP because it puts the download right in the Downloads folder on our computer. If you choose HTTP, on the next page, click the link named “IBM i Access Client Solutions”.

Once it’s downloaded, go to your Downloads folder, and go into the folder named “IBM_i_Access_Client_Solutions”. You may have to unzip this folder first, depending on your operating system. There is a 32 bit and a 64 bit version. Choose the folder that corresponds to your operating system on your computer. Find “setup.exe” and run it to install.
