2024 is a presidential election year in the U.S. and Ryan Maltzen, Cybersecurity Architect at Fortra, predicts an increase in attempts to influence votes through propaganda and social media campaigns, aided by the use of generative AI.

“Generative AI has the ability to enact a lot of technical and informational impacts upon our society that can be both positive and negative during election cycles. Information is a critical component in helping people make the decisions and choose candidates that best represent them in their needs. And the accuracy of this information is equally critical when it comes to helping people make these decisions.  

In the past we’ve had a heavy reliance on news organizations and trusted partners to provide this information, and with that comes a level of trust and scrutiny that is associated with the delivery of that news. With the birth and expansion of the internet, we’ve opened up a Pandora’s Box of information upon the world and anyone’s voice can be heard, many of which do not experience that same level of scrutiny that came from traditional sources.”
