This year, Fortra has been pushing the security envelope on a number of different fronts, and we’re excited to stay on the forefront of cyber change.
On that note, here are Fortra’s top ten highlights of 2025. Running these down at year’s end keeps us honest. It shows both our customers and us how far we’ve come, and the exciting places we’re heading toward.
1. Acquiring Lookout Cloud Security
Fortra acquired Lookout’s Cloud Security business back in March, enhancing our ability to break the attack chain in the cloud. This brings Lookout’s Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB), Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), and Secure Web Gateway (SWG) into the Fortra lineup, and allowing Fortra to offer a comprehensive Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) solution.
Now, Fortra is equipped to provide “one of the industry’s most complete cloud security solutions” that stops threats from endpoint to cloud.
“This is a strong move for Fortra,” noted Christopher Kissel, Research Vice President, IDC. “By adding CASB and DSPM capabilities to their portfolio, Fortra is building an impressive set of capabilities in must-have security solutions.”
2. Industry Showings at BlackHat, AWS, and RSA Conference
At BlackHat USA 2025, Fortra hit hard on AI and offensive security innovations. Highlights included presentations on next-gen post-exploitation in Cobalt Strike, modern red teaming injection techniques, and training specialist models to automate malware development for ethical hacking purposes. Notably, in this last presentation, we released a new seven-billion parameter model that outperforms current industry-standard LLMs in evasive malware creation: another way Fortra is moving the needle forward.
During RSA 2025, we were proud to present our entire defensive to offensive security lineup, unique among vendors, to the over 40,000 security professionals in attendance. Rohit Dhamankar, VP of Product Strategy, sat down with SC Media’s CyberRisk TV to discuss our efforts to disrupt cybercrime through ongoing collaboration with law enforcement and industry leaders. Since 2023, illicit use of Cobalt Strike has decreased by 80%.
At AWS re:Invent in December, we showcased how our integrated offensive and defensive offerings team up to secure organizations’ AWS security posture across the attack chain. As businesses transition from on-premises to the cloud, our solutions bridge the divide, encompassing DSPM, penetration testing, brand protection, and more.
3. Launching Data Security Posture Management (DSPM)
This October, we unveiled our new Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) solution to help customers manage their data in complex environments. It “[addresses] one of the most critical challenges facing modern enterprises: maintaining visibility and control over data in increasingly complex, distributed environments,” the press release states.
Unlike other pure-play DSPM offerings on the market, Fortra DSPM goes beyond discovering and classifying data; it integrates with Fortra’s suite of security solutions to protect that data, as well. This makes it unique among other DSPM platforms in its ability to provide end-to-end coverage of data across the hybrid cloud.
4. New AI-Powered Upgrades for Cloud Email Protection
In July, we announced a slew of new features for Fortra Cloud Email Protection (CEP), designed to boost protection against advanced social engineering threats.
These threats are often AI-generated and evade traditional and even advanced email protection techniques, such as secure email gateways. That’s why we've added enhanced threat hunting capabilities, deeper intelligence integrations, and a host of new AI-driven features that can classify intent by content, detect embedded redirect links, identify payment scams based on shared characteristics alone, and more.
5. Introducing Fortra Protect, Global Partner Program
In the last half of May, Fortra rolled out a new global partner program: Fortra Protect. The announcement came at the 2025 Fortra EMEA Partner Summit and “reinforces [our] investment and commitment to being a channel-first organization.”
Fortra Protect is engineered to deliver end-to-end security solutions to customers while bolstering reseller and distributor profitability. Through the program, partners will be able to confidently increase customer success by having access to additional tools, education, resources, certifications, and support.
6. Fortra CEO Matthew Reck: Interview in Cybersecurity Insiders
In November, Fortra CEO, Matthew Reck was interviewed by Cybersecurity Insiders for his take on closing the visibility gap that exists in complex modern environments. The discussion centered around the strategic impact of DSPM in discovering data in distributed, AI-driven environments.
He explained how discovering where all your data resides is the new security baseline, and how Fortra DSPM leverages that discovery to provide proactive protection. Said Reck, “The data moves too fast for static controls. The system must help you defend it, not just describe it.”
7. 2024 Fortra Penetration Testing Report
The 2024 Fortra Penetration Testing Report represents our fifth annual global survey of cybersecurity professionals on their pen testing practices and perceptions. This year, 72% stated that they felt penetration testing had prevented a breach at their organization, and as many as 83% now test at least once or twice per year; a decided uptick from the previous year’s figures.
8. Fortra Is an Official Sponsor of the Minnesota Wild
This fall, Fortra proudly became an Official Cybersecurity Software Partner of the Minnesota Wild hockey team. This new, multi-year partnership entails a joining of two organizations that call Minnesota home and are giving back far beyond its bounds. As part of the sponsorship, Fortra’s name will appear on the team’s away helmets.
Comments Reck: “Just as the Wild bring world class strength, speed, and resilience to the ice, Fortra brings the same energy to the cybersecurity market by providing the most advanced defensive and offensive cybersecurity tools on the planet.”
9. Fortra, Microsoft, and Health-ISAC: 80% Less Cracked Cobalt Strike
After years of working together to eliminate unauthorized versions of Fortra’s Cobalt Strike in the cybercrime marketplace, Fortra, Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit (DCU), and Health-ISAC are proud to announce the number of cracked Cobalt Strike copies in the wild has gone down by a staggering 80% over the past two years.
Over 200 malicious domains have been sinkholed and the average dwell time is now under two weeks worldwide.
10. Fortra: Empowering the Rising Tide of Purple Teaming
Fortra continues to stay on the razor’s edge of innovative offensive security, as evidenced by advancing the cause of the Purple Team this year. Rather than dividing security practitioners with a competitive Red vs. Blue mindset, Fortra advocates changing the security mindset by creating a holistic cybersecurity think tank that only lives to get better; by whatever Red or Blue means possible.
As stated in our September blog post, “Purple team cybersecurity is coming to encompass the kind of comprehensive, 360-degree approach that’s necessary to defeat advanced adversaries today.”
