Brad Hauer

Brad Hauer is a Data Scientist II on Fortra’s Email Security Team, where he analyzes email data and develops tools and models to protect customers from evolving threats. With a background in natural language processing and applied AI, Brad brings practical, research-driven expertise to his work in cybersecurity, focusing on solutions that are effective, explainable, and aligned to real-world security challenges.

Before joining Fortra, Brad earned a PhD in Computing Science from the University of Alberta, where he conducted doctoral and postdoctoral research in multilingual natural language processing systems and resources. He has authored more than 30 NLP-related publications, including award-winning and award-nominated research in peer-reviewed venues.

Brad specializes in natural language processing, AI and machine learning for email security, and large language models, with a focus on small open-weight models. He advocates for practical, evidence-based AI use that emphasizes understanding, validation, and choosing the right model or method for the problem at hand.
