Executive Summary
October brings significant exposure across web infrastructure, network management, and everyday desktop software. Several vulnerabilities are already being exploited, while others offer unauthenticated paths to code execution or weaken protections around untrusted content.
The potential consequences range from endpoint compromise to administrative control of network infrastructure. Risk varies with internet exposure, access to management interfaces, and how applications process email, web content, and compressed data.
Patch Priority Table
Priority | CVE | Product | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | CVE-2026-109618, CVE-2026-109619 | PHP web deployments | Unauthenticated web-request RCE; demonstrated mod_php exploit before application code runs. |
2 | CVE-2026-76504 | Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager | Active exploitation; unauthenticated administrative API access. |
3 | CVE-2026-96951 | Windows Shell / Microsoft Edge | Active exploitation; Mark of the Web bypass requiring user action. |
4 | CVE-2026-0322 | PAN-OS / Panorama | Limited exploitation observed; root-level RCE requires privileged authentication and management access. |
5 | CVE-2026-70242 | Microsoft Office Outlook | Reading Pane RCE without opening attachments or clicking content. |
6 | CVE-2026-118306, CVE-2026-118344 | Google Chrome | Critical FileSystem memory corruption and Layout use-after-free in a broadly deployed browser. |
7 | CVE-2026-117861, CVE-2026-117865 | Mozilla Firefox | DOM navigation sandbox escape and JavaScript garbage-collection use-after-free. |
8 | CVE-2026-70229 | Active Directory Domain Services | Unauthenticated service RCE; particular configuration and timing conditions increase complexity. |
9 | CVE-2026-111497 | Node.js / Brotli | Potential RCE when applications decompress attacker-supplied Brotli data. |
10 | CVE-2026-108398 | Microsoft .NET Framework | Publicly disclosed WDAC bypass; requires authenticated local access. |
Priority Tiers
Tier 1
PHP’s demonstrated mod_php exploit can reach vulnerable code before application logic runs. Cisco’s exploited authentication bypass grants administrative API access without credentials. Both expose powerful capabilities through unauthenticated requests.
Windows Shell and PAN-OS also have observed exploitation, although their prerequisites differ. Windows Shell requires user action and bypasses Mark of the Web. PAN-OS requires privileged authentication and management-interface access, with successful exploitation enabling root-level code execution.
Tier 2
Outlook’s Reading Pane attack path and browser memory-safety and sandbox flaws have broad endpoint relevance. Malicious content can reach vulnerable client code during normal use; these issues do not depend on the endpoint exposing a listening network service. Active exploitation was not confirmed.
AD DS permits unauthenticated network-service compromise under particular configuration and timing conditions. Node.js exposure depends on applications decompressing attacker-supplied Brotli data. These prerequisites limit the circumstances in which an attacker can reach the vulnerable behavior.
Tier 3
The .NET Framework flaw requires an authenticated local foothold and can bypass Windows Defender Application Control. Its impact is especially relevant where that control provides a security boundary. The issue is publicly disclosed, but active exploitation was not confirmed.
Informational - No Customer Patching Required
Cisco identifies Managed SD-WAN Cloud release 20.15.605 as remediated with no customer action required. Affected customer-managed deployments remain exposed.
CSO Takeaway
October’s most consequential risks involve control over web servers and network infrastructure, alongside attack paths through routine email and browsing. Existing authentication and content safeguards offer different levels of protection: some flaws bypass them, while others require attackers to have access already.
A reachable management interface, a vulnerable domain service, and an application processing untrusted data can carry very different business consequences. Observed exploitation adds urgency, while deployment conditions and the importance of affected systems determine the exposure within each organization.
