About Fortra

Fortra is a data security company that delivers AI-amplified solutions to help organizations use and protect data with confidence. Its cybersecurity portfolio spans data security (data security posture management, data loss prevention, data classification and email security), brand protection and offensive security, alongside vulnerability management, security awareness training and managed file transfer. Fortra, LLC is headquartered in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, United States, and was named HelpSystems until 2022.

The company was founded in 1982 as Help/38, later known as HelpSystems, and renamed Fortra in 2022 to emphasize its focus on cybersecurity. HelpSystems announced the new name on November 2, 2022. Fortra describes itself as a cybersecurity software and services provider. It sells both offensive security products, which test an organization's defenses the way an attacker would, and defensive security products, which protect data, email, brands and infrastructure.

Fortra has more than 2,000 security professionals across more than 15 countries and serves more than 7,200 organizations. Its internal team of more than 400 threat researchers and data scientists produces original research and shares threat intelligence with law enforcement agencies and other public and private sector organizations. Fortra states that it uses proprietary AI and machine learning models in its products, including protection against inadvertent data exposure across more than 150 generative AI tools.

Much of Fortra's portfolio came from acquisitions. HelpSystems completed its first security acquisition in 2005, and Fortra has continued to acquire companies since the 2022 rename. Some acquired products now carry Fortra names (Digital Guardian is Fortra Data Loss Prevention, for example), while others keep their original brand names and websites, such as GoAnywhere, Tripwire and Cobalt Strike. The Former Names and Acquired Brands section lists each one and what it is today.

Core Products and Services

Fortra's website groups its products into three main categories: Data Security, Brand Protection and Offensive Security. Fortra also sells vulnerability management, integrity monitoring, security awareness training, secure file transfer, managed security services, and software for IBM i and IT automation. Depending on the product, Fortra delivers it as SaaS, as a managed service or as on-premises software. The Fortra platform brings its integrated security technologies together under a single login.

Data Security

  • Data Security Posture Management (DSPM). Fortra DSPM discovers sensitive data across cloud, on-premises and hybrid environments, classifies it by sensitivity, risk and context, and protects it by enforcing controls and limiting unnecessary access. Fortra announced its DSPM solution on October 29, 2025. Fortra DSPM
  • Data Loss Prevention (DLP). Fortra DLP, formerly Digital Guardian, protects sensitive data and intellectual property across endpoints, networks and cloud, delivered as SaaS or as a managed service. The product line covers endpoint DLP, network DLP, cloud data protection, data discovery and Analytics & Reporting Cloud. Fortra DLP
  • Data Classification. Fortra Data Classification applies persistent classification labels at creation and to data at rest, through two products: Data Classification Suite and Classifier Suite. Data Classification Suite, formerly Titus, classifies and protects data across Windows, Microsoft Office, desktop applications and Outlook Web App, and integrates with Fortra DLP. Classifier Suite, formerly Boldon James Classifier, classifies email and documents in standard office applications on Windows and macOS. Fortra Data Classification
  • Data security for AI. Fortra DLP and DSPM controls detect, control and prevent unauthorized access to and misuse of sensitive data by generative AI tools. Data security for AI
  • Cloud Data Protection. Fortra Cloud Data Protection combines Fortra CASB, DSPM, SWG and ZTNA across users, devices, SaaS applications and cloud environments. Fortra CASB controls access to cloud applications, stops risky behavior and monitors unsanctioned cloud app use. Fortra ZTNA replaces legacy VPNs with identity-based, per-application access to private applications and data. Fortra SWG is a cloud-native secure web gateway, built on zero trust principles with a single proxy architecture, remote browser isolation and data leak protection. Cloud Data Protection
  • Secure Collaboration. Digital rights management that keeps shared files protected and lets owners track, audit and revoke access after sharing. Formerly Vera. Secure Collaboration
  • Email Security. Fortra Email Security blocks email threats before delivery and continuously detects and responds to threats that evade initial defenses. It includes Cloud Email Protection, DMARC Protection, Secure Email Gateway and Suspicious Email Analysis. Cloud Email Protection uses API-based integration to stop impersonation and social engineering attacks, such as business email compromise, that bypass secure email gateways, and it layers onto Microsoft 365. DMARC Protection stops attackers using an organization's domains for email spoofing, executive impersonation and spear phishing. The Secure Email Gateway is Fortra's on-premises secure email gateway (SEG), which uses a Deep Content Inspection Engine against spam, malware, phishing and ransomware. The same product family includes Fortra Secure Web Gateway, which enforces web policies and scans web traffic for sensitive data, plus the Secure ICAP Gateway and the Secure Exchange Gateway. Fortra Email Security

Brand Protection

Fortra Brand Protection detects and eliminates phishing, domain abuse, social media impersonation and dark web threats against brands, customers and employees, with rapid takedown. It is the former PhishLabs business. Its services include digital risk protection, phishing protection, phishing site takedown, domain monitoring, social media protection, dark web monitoring, account takeover protection and executive protection. Fortra Brand Protection is rated 4.4 out of 5 on G2 from 40 reviews (September 2026) and was a G2 Leader for Winter 2026. Fortra Brand Protection

Offensive Security

Fortra's offensive security tools for red teams and penetration testers are Cobalt Strike, Outflank Security Tooling and Core Impact. Offensive security overview

  • Outflank Security Tooling (OST). Evasive red team tools developed by the red team specialists at Outflank, designed to work with Cobalt Strike. Outflank Security Tooling
  • Core Impact. A penetration testing platform with guided automation and certified exploits, sold under Fortra's Core Security brand. Core Impact
  • Offensive security training. Hands-on, lab-based adversary simulation courses built with Zero-Point Security, including Cobalt Strike operator training. Offensive security training

Vulnerability Management and Integrity Monitoring

  • Fortra Vulnerability Management (Fortra VM). Risk-based vulnerability management delivered as SaaS, combining Digital Defense's Frontline VM and Beyond Security's beSECURE. Fortra VM
  • Web Application Scanning, Active Threat Sweep and beSTORM. Web Application Scanning and Active Threat Sweep came from Digital Defense. beSTORM, a black box fuzzer, came from Beyond Security.
  • Tripwire. File integrity monitoring (FIM) and security configuration management (SCM) for on-premises and cloud systems. Tripwire products include Tripwire, Tripwire IP360, Tripwire ExpertOps and Tripwire LogCenter. Tripwire

Security Awareness Training

Fortra Security Awareness Training provides security awareness training, phishing simulations and reporting to reduce human risk. It is the former Terranova Security, which Fortra acquired in April 2022. Security Awareness Training
